PEOPLE... CAMBODIA (THE KILLING FIELDS)

 
 
 
Dear all,

My apologies for a long absence...
Touching lives through photography is what I aim to do. But, how could I touch lives if I couldn't reach them? What an uphill struggle!!! I donno.... I've given up on ever being top 100 in fotopage.
Thank you so much again for visiting/commenting in the spirit of idea sharing where there is no right or wrong answer... I really appreciate the time and the effort you have taken for each visit and each comment...

ps: I went to Cambodia and Vietnam for vacation 3 weeks ago..



The past...
The Killing Fields were a number of sites in Cambodia where people were killed and buried by the Khmer Rouge communist regime which ruled the country from 1975 to 1979. Estimates of the number of dead range from 1.5 to 3 million out of a population of nearly 8 million people.
The best-known of these sites is Choeung Ek (where these 3 photos were taken) where it is the site of a Buddhist memorial to the terror.




The present...
Now, the place looks more like a field with a lot of holes but we cannot go there and not feel the chill of the past. Nonetheless, life goes on...
I don't think the boy even realizes what the place was. To him, it is a place for his cows to graze... while pondering upon his future...




The future...
There are many children at Killing Fields who would crowd visiting tourists. They would gather together, and say in a singsong way "1, 2, 3...Smile!!"
Sorry... I don't like taking posed shots...
By the way, out of the thousands of shots I've taken, I consider this as being my best shot. What do you think?

Ha ha.. Azli.. what's with being top 100. No.. you don't hafta be top 100 nor top 1. You are who you are.. you shoot n share. Sometimes being on the top made us forget those at the bottom. Something difficult.. probably beyond our control.. even if we want to. Guess we are in a way.. glad that you r not the top 100.. if you are not.. that is. Micheal Yamashita is not here to share.. for he's on top there. Sharing thru National Geographic doesn't really give us.. me.. the right feeling. You seems to be much closer.. much personal.. it's great to see that you're posting again. I think as long as you have fun and enjoy taking pictures it doesn't matter the place you're on in a top. I think a lot of people here enjoy your photography and that's really important. Really like the photo of the little girl and love love the photo of the women. It's really a great photo. Then planned to shoot my children at the park during sunset.. just before buka puasa.. drop that as well.. and regret it. Coz on the road heading back.. the sky was damn beutiful.. really rare. Did you all know that Azli's images were selected to be featured in a magazine (and it's an outside Malaysia magazine) Yeah Azli, I know you don't want to be known as a pro-photographer, but at the recent MWPA meeting, I was educated that once a photographer gets paid for any job, he/she can no longer be classified as an amateur photographer. i like the cambodian girl's expression. Her eye contact towards the camera looks like she's not willing to get captured, but it was unpretentious..

the pic of tourist is simply the best shot i've seen from you. It looks very commercial! you should send this photo for a competition or something. i love the various expressions and gestures captured in it. And it looks very lively.

The lady in the jilbab(do i get that right?). Spot on.. Beautiful. Looks like you are her secret admirer who was mesmerized by her beauty. And yeah, she's beautiful.

Wah Azli! Your people shots kept getting better and better. I gotta save up for some adventure travel too. In the meantime I'll keep on shooting anything near and hopefully catch up with your people skills. I know for a fact that street photography is difficult, especial getting an intimate portrait shot with a complete stranger. Here, the true image quality is not only determined by the technical & aesthetic aspect alone, but more than anything is how you get the shots. Clearly you've demonstrated your extraordinary people skills here. Kudos!
