PEOPLE... THREE WOMEN...

AND A MAN...

Dear All,
Thank so much again (even those spineless anonymous commenters!!!) for visiting/commenting in the spirit of idea sharing where there is no right or wrong answer...
Have a great week and a greater weekend ahead.. Keep on shooting!!

Best regards,
Azli Jamil

ps: THREE WOMEN were shot at X-Games
A MAN was shot in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail last night, while we were waiting for our dinner. (Yes. I know that the picture is completely overexposed. I forgot to adjust the intensity when I did the wireless flash shot. The expression and the strong eye contact saved the shot. I think it turned out quite nice in b&w though in color it is so overexposed!)

pps: A STORY...
I first saw Coz (A MAN) on my first night in Bangkok in January , a day where Stefan and I watched sunrise in Angkor Wat, had tea at McDonalds KLIA and dinner in Khaosan Road (a backpackers area). After dinner, we hang around and watched people passing by. Then I saw this bare footed man approach a Thai street musician, borrowed his guitar and started singing (Quite a melodious voice I might add).
The next day, we found ourselves back in Khaosan Road, met and talked with a group of tourists including the gorgeous Australian beauty, Samantha. I showed them my sunrise photos. Coz joined in. I remember him borrowing one of the girl’s camera, put the camera on the ground and took a shot of them. The night ended on a high note.
The next day, we passed by Khaosan Road again and saw Coz from afar. Then he was gone and I never thought I would ever see him again…
Last Saturday, at the X-Games, as I was about ready to leave, I decided to shoot the Tae Kwan Do demonstration. Armed with my 50mm 1.8 lens, I decided to seek a better angle for my shots. Found my spot and started shooting. In between shots, I saw him! What a small world! I went, said Hi and was pleasantly surprised that he remembered me. We talked. I gave him my card and asked him to contact me. Didn’t think he would but he did.
He called on Monday and we decided to meet after office at KLCC Starbucks (my fav. hang out place). We talked and talked and when the sun sets, he became my tourist model. I shot pics of him around KLCC and my trademark tourist shots with KLCC as the background.
I took him to my favorite restaurant, Muhibbah Restaurant coz I know food would taste better with people whose company I enjoy. I do enjoy his company and his traveler’s tales and of course I shot some more including the test shot I posted above.
After dinner, I drove him back to his hostels where he packed as he was going to Penang on the midnight bus. I took more photos at the bus station including the farewell wave.
How I envy him.. He’s a bohemian traveler who has seen part of this region I hope to someday see but don’t think I ever would.
He is finally on the tail end of his adventure, hoping to make a few more stops along the way before going home a seasoned traveler, to begin life anew. I hope he knows that whatever he does, I wish him well always.
I know that each time I travel anywhere in the future, even for a fleeting moment, my mind would wander to Kasel Yamashita, a Canadian I met for such short time but I’m so certain I will never see again nor ever forget… Coz… Terima kasih…
Life goes on…

Dear All,
Could the essence of a wedding be shown in 9 black & white photos, without showing any face?
You tell me... Be brutal, if need be...
As always thank you so much again for visiting/commenting in the spirit of idea sharing where there is no right or wrong answer... I'll try my best to answer all questions...
A very special thanks to those who decided to honor me by linking my page to their fotopages.

ps: I know there are 11 pictures and #5 has a face

Bro Azli...

Agree that all images above shown Essence of a Wedding Ceremony.
But i guess the couple will be much happier if there are more images showing their beautiful faces plus those essence.

i think most people have a fixed notion of what wedding photos should be... to me there's nothing inherently *wrong* about doing weddings in b/w, it's just that Malay weddings are colorful by design, and your clients probably wouldn't happy to find you got rid of all that (esp the bride-lah). seems that most people are kept happiest with several b/w and the rest in color. #4, #5, #7 and #9 are good shots and pretty standard in many wedding photogs repertoire, i think.

... which is why personally i wouldn't be happy seeing you do weddings for a living. your personal vision is too strong to let it be restrained by your clients' expectations. ur photos are gorgeous, but in a raw, honest way, not in the corseted, heavily made up way that brides are also said to be beautiful. that raw, honest beauty is much more rare and much harder to find. i hope one day i shall succeed in tapping it as well as you do. i'm still very young so i've got a loooonnnggggg way to go i'd love to learn stuff from you if you would be so kind...

Firstly, kudos to everybody involved in making Zooming 2006 a resounding success!!!! Who would have thought that 100+ photographers would have attacked the Zoo with resounding success, aye?
I went, not as a participant, but I really enjoyed the day . Suddenly, all these nicknames and fotopage addresses became living breathing people with different personalities and characters.
Thank you so much to the Organizing Committee, the experts and all who spared a Sunday for the experience and memories I will always cherish. Thank you..
I hope that all who went will post their photos. How often do we get that many photographers shooting at the same place and under the same condition. What a range of interpretations we have! Here are my shots... What do you think?
Thank you so much again for visiting/commenting in the spirit of idea sharing where there is no right or wrong answer..
Have a great week and a greater week ahead.. Keep on shooting!!

Best regards,
Azli Jamil

ps: Why I chose these shots (apart from the bokeh effect). All shot were on A mode coz I want the 2.8 effect. Most croppings were done due to zoom limitation.
#1: I love the expression of the woman in the middle. Eye contact there.
#2: The shot I wanted, eye contact with the tiger. No shaky camera on the tiger picture (the leaves and the tiger's face are sharp and in focus). Basically, the tiger moved at faster speed than 1/60 therefore resulting in that motion blur. One of my early shots and my ISO was still set at 200.
#3: I shoot people and the boy pretending to be a plane captured my attention.
#4: Look at the focused expression... and the bokeh too.
#5: I composed the shot this way with the other chimp forming the blurred background. The thinking pose by the front chimp is an added bonus.
#6: My biggest lighting problem shot. Nonetheless, I got the eye contact.
#7: The lighting, color combination and the bokeh was too tempting to resist. A second more and I would have missed this shot.
#8: The lined up horns caught my attention. I waited for the eye contact moment.
#9: This, I don't know how to explain other than I just like the subjects and composition of the picture.

The 3rd picture makes me smile!
i really like it!
I'm Lovin' It!

Dear All,
Thank you so much again for visiting and commenting in the spirit of idea sharing where there is no right or wrong answer, and for the birthday wish.. Thank you...
Three postings ago, I mentiond that the KEY to taking photos is CONFIDENCE. Another KEY, to me, is MOOD. When my mood is off, so are my shots!!
In my next posting, I shall show how MOOD and MUSE combined to create photos that gave me joy and satisfaction. Oh ya! Let us not forget my long awaited new Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens too..
Have a great week and a greater week ahead.. Keep on shooting!!

Best regards,
Azli Jamil

ps: I had just realized today (06/04/06) that the text is missing. Wonder how that happened...

Bro Azli...

By looking at this entry....i can said that those caption surely not taken by ordinary visitor. Approach of person with knowledge.
I guess all taken handheld... front to front ( facing mirror ) caption..and if from the side, a usage of PL filter to avoid reflection plus clearer image, no flash use at all and total manual focusing for sharp result.
You can stick with ISO 400 or 800 ( i guess Noise still minimal ).

My suggestion ( i never visit Aquaria before )...for more DOF, you can try close down your aperture from f1.8 to f2.8 ( or any aperture in between...not sure if there is ).

Well done.
Fri 19-May-2006 03:18
Posted by:abdhakamabdah  - [Link]
Yep! All handheld. Knowing the light limitation and no flash allowed, I waited 3 months till I get my 50mm f1.8 till I went there. No PL filter (so mahal) and autofocus (I stopped manual focusing whein autofocus came out a long time ago. Sometimes I will manual focus).
During the shoot, I set to A (to maximize on the f1., watched my shutter and upped the ISO when the shutter speed becomes to slow for a capture. The higher the ISO, the worse the tone. In case of the last picture, even at ISO 1600, the fastest shutter I could get was 1/100.
Thanks for the suggestion. With the 1.8, I can go 2, 2.2, 2.5, 2.8 and if I were to go there again (don't think I would coz RM28 is too much to pay for what they have).

That was 2 years ago, today...

Bro Azli...

No matter what you do...for All those Images...Excellent .
Except Last Image : I think too dark...i guess the moon not sharp/ lack detail ( could be due to your setting for slow shutter otherwise you would get the Fountain as what you hope )...my suggestion...again just suggestion...probably, come earlier when the sky still blue ( just after sunset ) and find out when the moon will be a Full.

I recently found out that Iif I shoot beween 7 to 730pm, the sky will come out blue.
Actually, that was a full moon shot and I shot with a tripod. Hmmm.. Looking at my RAW files. Actually, the metering went to the fountain. The moon was just in the picture. I'll tell you the full story about the shot someday.

Dear all,
If I have offended anyone with my comments, I would like to apologize for being harsh but rest assured that I would keep on doing it coz what each person can expect from me is HONESTY.

I believe that the KEY to taking photos is CONFIDENCE. So to all those who include the word "CRAPPY" in their postings, please STOP doing that!!! It's not good for your CONFIDENCE!!!

Thank you very much for continuing to visit/comment in the spirit of idea sharing where there is no right or wrong answer…
Have a great week and a greater weekend ahead

Best regards,
Azli Jamil

ps: I've included the setting for my photos. % crop means % of photo I cropped out. Shutter and aparture setting were set at Program setting. I tend to adjust my ISO more than shutter and aparture unless there was a particular effect I was going for.

pps: My Tag shot:
Nothing fancy about the shot. The setting for the shot is ISO 200, 1/60. f/1.8, 50mm, 75% crop. Flash was bounced off ceiling.
It's obvious that the shot was horizontal. The place was dark and I was assisting my friend shot a birthday party. After hours of shooting in low light smoky area, I saw my relection on a glass door. So... I took a snapshot of myself.

Bro Azli...

For this entry....lovely Images for no 3, 6, 8 and 9.
Others fair....composition , background , element , sharpness...all can be improved...do Not get me wrong...because my blind mind could not see Strong Impact ( as my FP also bukan lah bagus sangat ).
Image 5 ( middle ) : Colourful but why the foot?..

The feet? I aimed fot that shot. Not that easy as I was trying to shot tight and the feet moved quite fast. Actually #2 and #5. Something different..
Agree. Not the best and most interesting posting.

em i must ask, since you were there, wat's your say on the topic/issue? was it that relevent to have such riot?
just trying to think from a different view here, since you don't put captions on what you captured.

some of us, and that includes me, surely would like to just let the picture be without any explaination underlying it. but let's be truthful, different people will and must express different thoughts through same situation. altho maybe the emotions are the same. so, expecting poeple would put captions on their own wouldn't be fair to your own work. poeple should see the work through your prepective, the situation around you, your left and right when the shutter has completed it's mechanism. by just including technical info, most of us wouldn't appreciate that (don't get me wrong, i do appreciate that, but it's like exposing too much secret about the creative eye).

pictures may worth 1001 words, but with a sentence added, it's worth 20 words more...

why not?

Dear All,
Thank you so much for visiting/commenting that keep inspiring and aiding me and other visitors in the spirit of idea sharing where there is no right or wrong answer…
I would like take this opportunity to share my favorite poem with you...

“IF” by Rudyard Kipling (winner of Nobel Prize in Literature – 1907)

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Please keep visiting and commenting. Be brutal, if need be! I would just say “Ouch!!”
Thank you again… Have a very nice day and a nicer weekend…

Best regards,
Azli

Dear Bro Azli...

Image 1 : It would be better if only 2 persons there as the person in the middle looks distracting or perhap...she would be better if standing more to the left.
Image 9 : No much strong element in it. Look bit messy.

Well done for others images
